The over-rouged young lady followed her with a brief, bitter glanceâ then turned again to the weak-chinned waiter and took up her argument.
âYou better go up and tell him Iâm here,â she said defiantly, âor Iâll go up myself.â
âNo, you donât!â said George sternly.
The girl smiled sardonically.
âOh, I donât, donât I? Well, let me tell you I know more college fellas and more of âem know me, and are glad to take me out on a party, than you ever saw in your whole life.â
âMaybe soâââ
âMaybe so,â she interrupted. âOh, itâs all right for any of âem like that one that just ran outâGod knows where she wentâitâs all right for them that are asked here to come or go as they likeâbut when I want to see a friend they have some cheap, ham-slinging, bring-me-a-doughnut waiter to stand here and keep me out.â
âSee here,â said the elder Key indignantly, âI canât lose my job. Maybe this fella youâre talkinâ about doesnât want to see you.â
âOh, he wants to see me all right.â
âAnyways, how could I find him in all that crowd?â
âOh, heâll be there,â she asserted confidently. âYou just ask anybody for Gordon Sterrett and theyâll point him out to you. They all know each other, those fellas.â
She produced a mesh bag, and taking out a dollar bill handed it to George.
âHere,â she said, âhereâs a bribe. You find him and give him my message. You tell him if he isnât here in five minutes Iâm coming up.â
George shook his head pessimistically, considered the question for a moment, wavered violently, and then withdrew.
In less than the allotted time Gordon came down-stairs. He was drunker than he had been earlier in the evening and in a different way. The liquor seemed to have hardened on him like a crust. He was heavy and lurchingâalmost incoherent when he talked.
â âLo, Jewel,â he said thickly. âCame right away. Jewel, I couldnât get that money. Tried my best.â
âMoney nothing!â she snapped. âYou havenât been near me for ten days. Whatâs the matter?â
He shook his head slowly.
âBeen very low, Jewel. Been sick.â
âWhy didnât you tell me if you were sick. I donât care about the money that bad. I didnât start bothering you about it at all until you began neglecting me.â
Again he shook his head.
âHavenât been neglecting you. Not at all.â
âHavenât! You havenât been near me for three weeks, unless you been so drunk you didnât know what you were doing.â
âBeen sick, Jewel,â he repeated, turning his eyes upon her wearily.
âYouâre well enough to come and play with your society friends here all right. You told me youâd meet me for dinner, and you said youâd have some money for me. You didnât even bother to ring me up.â
âI couldnât get any money.â
âHavenât I just been saying that doesnât matter? I wanted to see you, Gordon, but you seem to prefer your somebody else.â
He denied this bitterly.
âThen get your hat and come along,â she suggested.
Gordon hesitatedâand she came suddenly close to him and slipped her arms around his neck.
